Teach For India (TFI) is part of the global Teach For All network and one of India’s most impactful education nonprofits. Founded in 2008 by Shaheen Mistri, TFI runs a two-year Fellowship that places India’s brightest college graduates and young professionals as full-time teachers in under-resourced schools serving low-income communities.
The Model: Fellowship × Leadership
- 2-year full-time teaching commitment — Fellows are placed in government and low-income private schools across 9 cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Jaipur).
- Intensive training — A rigorous 5-week Summer Institute prepares Fellows with classroom management, lesson planning, child psychology, and community engagement skills.
- Alumni movement — After the Fellowship, 3,000+ alumni work across education, policy, social entrepreneurship, government, and business — many founding their own schools, edtechs, and nonprofits.
- Impact at scale — TFI has reached over 1 million children across India. Alumni-founded organizations collectively reach millions more.
TFI doesn’t just place teachers — it builds a lifelong leadership pipeline for educational equity. Its alumni include Rhodes Scholars, Forbes 30 Under 30 honorees, and founders of organizations like The Akanksha Foundation and Leaders for Our Schools.
